What is a BRP (Biometric Residence Permit)?

A BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) is a secure document issued by the Home Office to confirm immigration status in the UK. The BRP card also holds your personal details such as name, date of birth and other biometric information. You can not use a BRP card to confirm your permission to work in the UK however you can prove your right to work online.

What to do if your BRP card is lost or stolen inside the UK?

You must report it online and apply for the replacement of your BRP card if your BRP card is lost or stolen inside the UK and was valid for 3 months or more. You must do this within 3 months of losing it.

You can be fined up to £1,000 and made to leave the UK if you do not apply for a replacement within 3 months.

What if BRP was valid for 3 months or less?

Depending on your circumstances, you can take several actions if your BRP card was valid for less than 3 months:

  • You do not need to apply for the BRP card replacement if your current visa and BRP were valid for less than 3 months and you do not want to live in the UK after the expiry of your visa. You just need to report to the Home Office about your lost or stolen BRP card.
  • You need to make a BRP card replacement application if you are about to travel outside the UK and planning to come back within 3 months of its expiry date.
  • If you are going to apply for a visa extension then you will get a new BRP card automatically if your visa is granted.

What to do if your BRP card is lost or stolen outside the UK?

You must report your lost or stolen BRP outside the UK. You cannot apply for a replacement BRP outside the UK. Instead, you'll need to apply for a 'replacement BRP visa', which lets you re-enter the UK once only.

You can apply for a replacement BRP when you return to the UK. You must do this within 3 months of reporting it lost or stolen unless you have a good reason, for example, you were unable to return to the UK at that time.

How to apply for a BRP card replacement?

You can submit a BRP card replacement application online if your BRP has been lost, stolen or damaged and you are currently inside the UK. Otherwise, you can get legal help from an expert immigration lawyer.

You need follow these steps if you wish to apply online for the replacement of your BRP card:

  • fill in and submit the online application form
  • pay a BRP replacement application fee of £56
  • You need to provide your biometrics (fingerprints and a photo)

BRP card replacement application processing time

BRP card replacement applications usually take 3-8 weeks from inside the UK. You cannot apply for BRP replacement from outside the UK. There is no super priority service available for the BRP replacement applications.

How much does it cost to replace a BRP card?

The Home Office fee for the BRP card replacement application is £56 if you want to replace your lost, stolen or damaged BRP card from inside the UK. You also need to pay £19.20 to register your biometrics.
