If you are an adult and you want to undertake a short course of study in the UK (such as a beginner's English Language course or a work-related training course), you might be able to come to the UK as a student visitor for short-term study. If you want to study a longer course, or you want to work (including on a work placement) alongside your studies, you should apply under Tier 4 (General) of the points-based system.

On Student visitor visa (Short-term study), you can stay in the UK for the length of your course or research. You may be allowed to stay an extra 30 days if your total stay in the UK would be no more than 6 months, or no more than 11 months if you are 16 or over and studying an English language course.

Eligibility criteria for UK standard visitor visa

One of the key factors in the visitor visa entry clearance applications is to satisfy the Entry Clearance Officer (ECO) that the applicant has strong family, financial and social ties to the country of origin and therefore he will return to the country of origin upon visiting the UK.

You must prove that you have been offered a place on a course in the UK at an accepted place of study and have enough money to support yourself without working or help from public funds, or that relatives and friends can support and house you.

You must also meet all the other eligibility requirements. Please contact us for initial assessment to determine your eligibility, and to discuss the options.

Where you can study

You must be accepted on a course with an education provider that holds a Tier 4 sponsor licence.

Otherwise your course will need to be held at an educational institution listed by one of the following:

  • Accreditation Body for Language Services
  • Accreditation Service for International Colleges
  • Accreditation UK
  • Bridge Schools Inspectorate
  • British Accreditation Council
  • Education and Training Inspectorate (in Northern Ireland)
