What is British citizenship?

Becoming a British citizen is a significant life event. Once you become a British citizen, it will give you the right to live and work in the UK permanently, without any immigration restrictions. It will also allow you to apply for a British passport.

You can apply for British citizenship either by Naturalisation or Registration to become a British citizen if you meet all the eligibility requirements.

What are the ways to become British citizen?

There are different ways to become a British citizen. You can either naturalise as a British Citizen (Naturalisation as a British citizen) or register yourself as a British Citizen (Registration as British citizen).

Below is a list of some common routes to British citizenship:

  • British citizenship by naturalisation
  • British citizenship by registration
  • British citizenship by marriage
  • Register child as a British citizen
  • British citizenship by descent

Many other ways to become a British citizen such as registering a person born to British mother before 1983, registering BNO as a British citizen and so on. Please contact us for initial assessment to determine your eligibility, and to discuss the options.

British citizenship by naturalisation

To apply for British citizenship by naturalisation you must usually have lived in the UK for 12 months after the grant of Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

We are expert in dealing with naturalisation applications and if instructed will carry out all the work on the application until the decision is received from the Home Office UKVI.

British citizenship by registration

If you do not qualify for British citizenship automatically or not entitled to registration, you may be eligible to apply for Registration as a British citizen on a discretionary basis if it is in the best interest of the child under section 3 (1) of the British Nationality Act 198. The chances of success are generally based on the evidence and assessment of child’s circumstances in particular if the future of the child clearly lies in the UK and UK by all means is the centre of the child’s life.

British citizenship by marriage

You can apply Naturalisation as a British citizen by Marriage, if you are married to a British citizen and you have lived in the UK for at least 3 years.

Register child as a British citizen

Children who are under the age of 18 years (minors) can apply to the Home Office for registration as British citizens by using (MN1 Application) under the British Nationality Act 1981.

British citizenship by descent

You may be eligible for British citizenship if you have a British parent. It depends on where and when you were born, and your parents’ circumstances. If you’re not automatically a British citizen, you may be eligible to apply to ‘register’ as one. Registering as a British citizen is usually simpler than becoming a citizen by naturalisation if you are eligible.
